Much of the world celebrates on 25 December. Georgia waits for its own Christmas on 7 January, then welcomes the New Year a second time on the 14th. That makes six weeks of lights, gingerbread, supra tables and fireworks, and our 37-floor tower is dressed for every one of them.
It starts on Chavchavadze Avenue and climbs all the way up: golden cones over the revolving door, reindeer on the pavement, a tree in the lobby, a red bench everyone stops to photograph and a teddy bear the children always find first. Winter in Tbilisi is short and bright, and we make the most of every week of it.

Arrive on a Friday, leave on a Sunday, and see the city at its brightest. Here is how we would spend it, from the lobby tree to the Old Town and back up to the 37th floor.
Your room is on floors 19 to 35, so the first thing you do is go to the window.
Vake Park and Chavchavadze Avenue are a few minutes away, lit and busy before the holidays.

A Georgian New Year has its own tree, its own sweet, its own carols and its own rule about who walks through the door first. Ask our front desk and they will tell you how their family does it.
The Georgian Christmas tree: a hazel or walnut branch shaved into long white curls, like a small white beard.
Turn overLook for chichilaki at the city's Christmas stalls in December. Families keep it until the Old New Year, then burn it to send the old year's troubles away.
Turn backWalnuts cooked in honey and cut into diamonds. No New Year's table in Georgia is complete without it.
Turn overIt is eaten so the year ahead is sweet. Only two ingredients, honey and walnuts, and every family insists theirs is the best.
Turn backOn the morning of 7 January, processions walk through Tbilisi singing carols and collecting gifts for those who need them.
Turn overAnyone can walk along. Bring something to give: sweets, warm clothes or food. Ask our front desk where the procession passes that morning.
Turn backThe first guest to cross the threshold after midnight brings the house its luck for the year.
Turn overArrive with sweets, a kind wish and, ideally, a good mood. Families choose a mekvle with a light step, so a lucky year follows them in.
Turn backBetween 25 December and 14 January there are four reasons to raise a glass in Tbilisi. A room in the tower puts you a lift ride away from each of them, and back to bed when the night is over.
